Described as “shockingly real and funny” by The Daily Telegraph, People Like Us was BBC THREE’s highest-rating debut factual series of 2012 by an independent production company.
Series 1 was set in and around the little-known Manchester estate of Harpurhey, where we met the Wakefield family – Paul, Karen, Amber and Maddie – bosses of the Wishee Washee launderette at the heart of the community.
Series 2 moved from Harpurhey to the Chelmsley Wood area outside Birmingham, where we met Pete and Ryan the two ambitious, entrepreneurial wrestlers who run a wrestling group; Sade who is determined to make a better life for her family; hardworking shopkeeper Mo; aspiring actors Charlie and Gareth; and football referee and aspiring history teacher, Josh.
