Then Barbara Met Alan Nominated at Scope Awards 2022
The Scope awards are shining a light on equality champions. They recognise and celebrate the achievements of people who:
- campaign for disability equality
- change attitudes
- bring about social change
Then Barbara Met Alan was nominated for Media Moment at this years Scope Awards. This award recognises a media moment involving disabled people that has had a powerful impact on championing disability equality. This could be a soap or drama storyline, entertainment TV show, film, podcast or any other mainstream format that has helped shift attitudes on disability.
Then Barbara Met Alan tells the story of Barbara Lisicki and Alan Holdsworth meeting at a comedy gig in 1989. The couple went on to form DAN (Disabled People’s Direct Action Network) and campaign for disabled people’s rights, leading to the passing of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act.
Their story is told in the BBC drama Then Barbara met Alan, written by Jack Thorne and Genevieve Barr. Starring Ruth Madeley and Arthur Hughes, the film highlights Barbara and Alan’s humour, energy and achievements.
Although not a winner this time, Dragonfly and the team are pleased to have been nominated and attend the Scope awards. A particular highlight was seeing Baroness Jane Campbell win a lifetime achievement award as she was an activist with D.A.N.
